Sometimes the Setbacks Are a Blessing in Disguise
When you’re rebuilding your life after a life-changing accident, every setback feels like another thing being taken away from you.
For me, the last few weeks have been incredibly frustrating. I was finally starting to feel more confident using my prosthetic leg. I was making progress. I was walking more, getting stronger, and beginning to feel like I was getting a piece of my independence back.
Then came the blood blisters.
My amputated leg developed painful blisters, and suddenly I couldn’t wear my prosthetic. I had no choice but to slow down and give my body time to heal.
At first, it felt like another obstacle. Another delay. Another reminder that recovery doesn’t happen on my timeline.
But something unexpected happened.
My remaining leg and ankle finally seemed to have the time they needed to recover. After my ankle surgery to remove three screws and the plate that had been holding my bone together, I had given it about four weeks before I started increasing my activity again. Looking back, that may not have been enough time for my body to fully heal.
The swelling that had been constant started to go down. My ankle started feeling stronger. The inflammation began to settle.
Maybe those blood blisters were actually my body forcing me to slow down when I needed to.
Sometimes we see setbacks as failures. We think we’re losing progress because we aren’t moving forward as quickly as we want. But sometimes a setback is actually our body protecting us. Sometimes it creates the space we need to heal, rebuild, and come back stronger.
This journey has taught me that resilience isn’t just about pushing through everything. Resilience is also about listening. It’s knowing when to fight, when to rest, and when to trust the process.
At 60, I’m learning how to rebuild my life in a completely different way than I imagined. There are hard days. There are emotional days. There are moments when reality hits me harder than I expect.
But there are also moments like this — moments where I realize that what felt like another setback may have actually been a blessing in disguise.
I’m not where I was before my accident.
I’m becoming someone new.
And I’m continuing my journey of resilience and reinvention, one step at a time.
