There Is Still Plenty of Life to Live

Lately, it has been hot, so I decided to do something that would make life a little easier. I cooked a bunch of different meals in the crock pot, put them into containers, and froze them. That way, when the weather is hot, I wouldn't have to do much cooking. Then a flyer came in from the local Mexican market. They had pineapples, plantains, mangoes, watermelon, cucumbers—fresh fruits and vegetables at really good prices. They also had beef shanks. So after the gym, I had my caretaker take me to the store. I already had plenty of food at home. I had meals in the freezer, food in the refrigerator, and everything I needed. I wasn't going to the store because I was running out of food. But when I got there, something happened. I felt happy. The store was colorful and full of fresh food. I could choose one of this, two of that, three of something else. I wasn't limited to whatever quantity happened to come in a package. I could actually look at what I wanted and decide what I wa...

The Healing Power of Dance: Movement for the Mind, Body, and Soul

The Healing Power of Dance: Movement for the Brain, Body, and Soul Dance is more than just an art form—it's a powerful tool for healing, self-expression, and brain health. Whether it's a joyful movement to music or a structured practice, dance engages the brain in ways that promote neuroplasticity, coordination, and emotional well-being. For stroke survivors like myself, dance offers an incredible way to reconnect with the body, rebuild strength, and restore confidence. Why Dance is Good for the Brain Movement is medicine, and dance is a particularly potent prescription. Here’s how dance benefits the brain: ✅ Boosts Neuroplasticity – Dance encourages the brain to form new neural connections, which is essential for stroke recovery. The combination of rhythm, movement, and coordination strengthens cognitive function. ✅ Improves Balance and Mobility – Stroke often affects coordination and stability, but dance can help retrain the body to move with more ease and control. ✅ Reduce...

The Hero’s Journey and the Power Stances That Propel Us Forward

Lately, I keep hearing the phrase "the hero’s journey" echoing in every training I attend, as if it's the key to unlocking personal transformation. It seems to be everywhere, and with good reason—this powerful narrative pattern taps into the universal experiences of challenge, growth, and triumph. But what exactly is the hero's journey, and how does it relate to something as simple (yet profound) as a power stance? In this blog, I’ll break down the hero’s journey, a timeless concept, and explore how power stances can symbolize and accelerate our own personal transformations. Together, they offer us a dynamic approach to tackling life's challenges with confidence, courage, and resilience. What is the Hero’s Journey? The hero's journey is a narrative archetype that has been woven into stories throughout history and across cultures. It describes a hero who embarks on an adventure, faces challenges, learns important lessons, and returns home forever changed. This ...

Have you ever been so caught up in your work or creative flow that you push through exhaustion—only to crash later, wondering why you’re so drained? I know the feeling all too well. As someone who thrives on passion and productivity, I used to think burnout only happened to people with physically demanding jobs. But I’ve learned the hard way that mental and emotional exhaustion can take just as much of a toll on the body. Burnout isn’t just about being tired—it affects your emotions, cognitive function, and even your physical health. From chronic fatigue and muscle aches to anxiety, forgetfulness, and even feelings of hopelessness, burnout is serious. But the good news? You can prevent it with mindful balance. How to Balance Productivity Without Burning Out Set Boundaries Around Work and Rest Schedule breaks just like you schedule tasks. Use time-blocking to avoid working non-stop. Set a daily cut-off time for work, even if you feel “on a roll.” Listen to Your Body Fatig...

Is Your Gut Considered Your Second Brain? How Does Junk Food Affect Your Mood?

The idea of the gut being a "second brain" is a popular analogy, and while it's not literally a brain, there's strong scientific evidence supporting a powerful gut-brain connection. The gut plays a crucial role in regulating mood, cognitive function, and overall well-being. The Enteric Nervous System (ENS): The gut is home to the enteric nervous system (ENS), a complex network of neurons lining the gastrointestinal tract. The ENS can function independently of the brain and spinal cord, controlling digestion, muscle contractions, enzyme secretion, and blood flow. It contains as many neurons as the brain of a cat or dog. The Gut-Brain Axis: The gut and brain communicate through multiple pathways, including: The vagus nerve : A direct communication highway between the gut and brain. Hormones : The gut produces hormones that influence brain function. Neurotransmitters : The gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, which regulates mood and emotions. The immune syst...

Why I Became a Coach: Healing from Stroke, Trauma, and Energy Blocks

I suffered a stroke on August 3rd, 2020, during COVID. I woke up half-paralyzed, and the next thing I knew, I was rushed to the hospital, where they removed a blood clot from my brain. I was scared to death, not knowing if I would ever be able to walk again—but I did. I had to learn how to walk, talk, and eat again. Choking on my food was also an issue. Before my stroke, like many others, I was sitting on the couch, eating potato chips and unhealthy foods, not really caring—until it nearly killed me. The stress, anxiety, fear, and worry, on top of not taking care of myself, all contributed to where I ended up. After leaving the hospital, I was sent to rehab, where I was left in bed for three days. I knew I had to get out of there because my situation ran deeper. I wasn’t just physically broken from the stroke—I was spiritually broken too. And they didn’t have the resources I needed. I was ready to fight for my life! Being left in bed was killing me even more, so I checked myself out ag...

The Reticular Activating System: Your Brain’s Gatekeeper and Its Role in Stress and Anxiety

Have you ever noticed how once you start thinking about buying a certain car, you suddenly see it everywhere? Or how a single negative thought can spiral into a whole cascade of worries? That’s your Reticular Activating System (RAS) at work. The RAS is a powerful network of neurons in the brainstem responsible for filtering sensory information, regulating alertness, and influencing our focus. But beyond helping us pay attention, it also plays a key role in stress, anxiety, and emotional regulation. Understanding how it works can help us manage our thoughts, emotions, and overall well-being. What is the Reticular Activating System (RAS)? The RAS is essentially your brain’s filter. Every second, your senses take in massive amounts of information, but your brain can only process a fraction of it. The RAS determines which stimuli are important and which can be ignored. It keeps you alert when necessary and helps transition between wakefulness and sleep. Here are its key functions: Regulati...

The Transformative Power of Yoga: From Rehab to Recovery

After leaving rehab, against the doctor's orders, I knew the road to recovery was in my hands. The doctors had left me in bed for three days, and it felt like time was slipping away. I decided to take control of my journey and push myself harder than anyone else could. I began practicing yoga using a series of DVDs, and little by little, I noticed improvements—not just in my physical strength, but in my mental and emotional health as well. Now, years later, I’m not only practicing yoga, I’m teaching it. I am certified in Hatha and gentle yoga, and I can say from my own experience that yoga has been an invaluable tool in my recovery. The benefits are profound, and it's a practice that I believe can transform anyone’s life, whether they are healing from a stroke, an injury, or simply seeking balance in their busy life.
